- Grease an 8-inch tube pan with cooking spray and dust with 1 tbsp sugar
- Cream butter and sugar in a stand mixer at medium speed for 3–4 minutes
- Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition
- Alternate flour additions with buttermilk in three batches
- Increase speed to high and mix for 2 more minutes
- Gently stir in vanilla extract and remaining sugar
- Pour batter into prepared pan and smooth surface with a spatula
- Tap pan twice to remove air bubbles
- Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 45 minutes
- Check with a toothpick; let cool in pan for 10 minutes before slicing
