Ingredients
  

  • 4 cups strawberries, hulled and halved
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose, bread or gluten-free flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • ½ cup cold, cubed butter (unsalted) or vegan butter
  • 1 cup milk (whole, almond, oat, or coconut)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoon salt

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease an 8x8-inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, mix strawberries with ¾ cup sugar. Let sit 10 minutes.
  3. Stir in cinnamon, nutmeg, and ½ cup of the remaining ¾ cups sugar. Transfer to baking dish.
  4. Combine 1 ½ cups flour, ½ tsp salt, 1 tbsp sugar, and 1 tbsp butter in a separate bowl. Cut in butter until crumbs form.
  5. Add remaining ½ cup cold butter, mixing until pea-sized crumbs form.
  6. Pour milk gradually into flour mixture, stirring until just combined.
  7. Spread batter over strawberry filling. Bake 45-50 minutes until golden and bubbly. Cool slightly before serving.
